ONE DAY INTRODUCTION TO FIBER OPTIC TESTING AND CERTIFICATION:

*****PRACTICAL INTRODUCTION HOW TO TEST AND CERTIFY FIBRE OPTIC CABLING AS PART OF THE STEPS TO BECOME A FIBER INSTALLATION ENGINEER*****

The purpose of this course is to meet the wide ranging needs of the communications cabling industry which is part of the communication technologies sector.

To ensure that the transmission of telecommunications services using light will work reliably. Fibre to the home, cabinet, business or building cabling infrastructures, are built to detailed specifications and quality standards.

Because of this. When installers have completed the installation of fibre optic cables a series of tests have to be completed. Insertion lost testing, OTDR tests and Optical return loss tests. To certify that the work that they or their employees have carried out, meets the required specification.

The training programme is designed for those that need to understand and be able to carry out these and other basic tests safely. Using the appropriate equipment and best practices.

THIS COURSE IS SUITABLE FOR:-

  • ELECTRICIANS CARRYING OUT WORKS IN SMALL NETWORKS SO THEY CAN TEST WHAT THEY HAVE INSTALLED.
  • THOSE FITTING WIRING WITHIN WIND TURBINES SO THAT THEY CAN TEST WHAT THEY HAVE INSTALLED.
  • THOSE WORKING ON SMALL NETWORKS WITHIN A COMPANY THAT NEED TEST SHORT LINKS.
  • THOSE INSTALLING FIBRE OPTIC CABLING, AS DIY PROJECTS (RURAL COMMUNITY DIY) TO TEST WHAT HAS BEEN INSTALLED.
  • THOSE INSTALLING THE DROP CABLES ON THE BT, EIRCOM, SIRO, AND VIRGIN MEDIA NETWORKS. TO ENABLE TO TEST FOR OPTICAL POWER
This is a one day course that starts off with the essential safety considerations, with an overview of the essentials of the technology that needs to be understood.

Followed by a series of practical exercises to prepare for individuals to complete these tasks in the work place. Such as referencing.

ESSENTIAL THEORY CONTENT:-

  • Safety general for training location dealing with fibre testing activities.
  • Testing. Why do we test, What are we testing for, Client specifications and requirements, Link certification, Handover documents and test reports.
  • Use of the Visible Light Source to check continuity and fault locate.
  • Understand and calculate link budgets and how they are used in testing.
  • Connector Inspection & Cleaning – identify connector faults, Understand issues of cleanliness and attenuation, How to clean connectors properly.
  • Understanding Insertion loss, Insertion loss testing. Understand Referencing, and how to conduct ILM tests using light source and power meter in multimode and single mode environments.
  • Understand return Loss testing – does the fibre link have too many reflections?.
  • Understand how to test an installed drop cable with optical power meter.

When you are with us you will work with qualified instructors that have worked in the industry doing the job they are teaching you to do. They will teach you in as realistic a work environment as can be.

Our centre has been put together with a practical working area, designed to ensure you gain the maximum benefit from this course.

OTDR THEORY
  • OTDR Introduction, how they work basic.
  • OTDR specifications and capabilities, Basic performance, Pulse width and Dynamic range.
  • OTDR for commissioning fibre links and networks – generate test results to certify and handover.
  • OTDR for Fault finding fibre links and networks – find a break in a fibre, a bend or a bad connector.
  • OTDR testing a passive optical network.
